Optimization of the Shape of an Electromagnet: Regularity

In this paper we study the regularity of the solution of an elliptic partial di erential equation with discontinuous coe cients. This result is used to establish the continuous Fr echet di erentiability of a shape functional arising in the optimal shape design of an electromagnet.

Optimization of the Shape of an Electromagnet: Finite Dimensional Approximation

The problem of nding the optimal shape of an electromagnet is considered in the context of nite element discretization of the state equation. An expression for the gradient in the nite dimensional setting is derived and compared with the corresponding in nite dimensional gradient. An asymptotic convergence result is proved under suitable smoothness assumptions on the nite element basis.
